I am a retired teacher and coach having spent 1999-2009 employed by Sweetwater School District #2. I have 36 years of classroom experience teaching language arts and social studies. Those years include teaching in the states of Arkansas and Wyoming.
I have an Associates of Arts degree from Eastern Oklahoma State College and a BS from the University of the Southwest. I have also done graduate work at Arkansas State University, Southern Arkansas University, and the University of Central Arkansas. I am a life member of the National Education Association. I served on active duty in the Army and the National Guard from 1968-1974.
My wife Linda is a guidance counselor at Green River High School and my daughter Rachel is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and publishes a magazine in Oxford, MS.
My goal as a member of the school board is to make decisions that will benefit the students, faculty, administration, staff, and patrons of Sweetwater #2. I look forward to helping continue the educational excellence of our schools.
I am honored to be serving my fourth term as a SWSD#2 Board of Trustees member. Having raised children in this district, and substitute teaching in this district for approximately 10 years, the excellence of education we must provide to our youth continues to be important to me. My other related involvement with youth in our community includes working as Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sweetwater County; Casework Specialist with the Wyoming Department of Family Services; and Family Service Coordinator with Sweetwater Child Development Center; and as a faculty member with Western Wyoming Community College for approximately 25+ years. I presently am a full-time Associate Professor of Communication at WWCC. Teaching is and always has been my first occupational love!
I bring diversity to the board given my background and cultural experiences- born and raised in Maine; graduated from the University of North Dakota with a BA in Journalism/ Speech Communications and an MA from UND in Speech Communications/Counseling; lived in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio - before moving here in 1991 to call Green River home.
My husband Mike and I have raised two daughters, Katherine and Sarah, who both graduated from Green River High School, and both later graduated from the University of Wyoming. Sarah is a middle school teacher in Grand Junction, Colorado, and Katie is a Genetics Counselor in Salt Lake City.
Giving back to the community is important to me and hopefully evidenced by not only by my involvement with the Board of Trustees, but in how I live my life. Over the past years I have been involved with the USA swim team, Girl Scouts, advising Congressional Medal participants, National History Day Coordinator for Southwest Wyoming, co-coordinator of Southwest Wyoming Spelling Bee Competition and various church and college activities. The biggest thing each of us can give to our community is our time for children - they will become our future leaders.
Sweetwater County School District #2 serves more than 2,600 students. There are 11 schools in our district. Within the Green River city limits, there are 4 elementary schools, one 5th-6th intermediate school, one 7th-8th middle school, one high school serving 9th-12th grades and one alternative high school serving grades 10th-12th. In addition, there are three rural schools serving students in our outlying areas. Those schools are located in the communities of Granger, McKinnon and Thoman Ranch.
We are pleased to deliver a comprehensive K-12 program for our students. Our dedicated staff supports student development through a well balanced curricular experience. Students will explore all core subject areas along with opportunities with art, music, theater, career and tech ed.
We are also proud to offer a full range of activities for students to participate in throughout the school year.
