PROGRAM GOAL

Sweetwater County School District #2 will meet the needs of English Language Learners by providing appropriate and necessary language instruction so that students will acquire the language communication skills to meet the state and district standards and succeed socially in a general education environment.

PROGRAM DESIGN

The primary factors determining program design are the varying needs of the English Learners and best practices for serving their needs. Sweetwater County School District #2’s program for English Learners is a district pull out and push in Sheltered English program with designated sites at all grade levels. Currently an ELL Coordinator, four certified ELL teachers, and highly qualified paraprofessionals staff the program. Flexible scheduling is utilized to meet individual student’s needs. The ultimate goal is full time placement of English Learners in the general education classroom with proficiency in the English language. Sweetwater County School District #2 provides support to classroom teachers through collaborative conference and staff development opportunities.

Upon exit from program, students will:

  • Demonstrate a proficiency level in listening, speaking, reading, writing and understanding English that promotes successful integration into the school environment.

  • Demonstrate a cognitive language level that will promote achievement of state and district standards in general education classrooms.

  • Demonstrate a level of cultural competency that promotes successful integration into the school and community environment.
